Echo North Productions was created in 2009 by Heather Schmidt, and comprises Echo North Productions (Canada) Inc., an Ontario corporation, and Echo North Productions, LLC (California).

Heather Schmidt’s career in filmmaking evolved from a career that began in music.  As an extension of a successful international career as a classical concert pianist and composer, Heather started scoring music for films, TV, and documentaries.  She soon realized that she wanted to do more than just compose the music – she wanted to become a filmmaker herself, specifically to write and direct.

Heather’s educational background includes music studies at the famous Juilliard in New York City, and at Indiana University, where at age 21, she became the youngest person to ever receive a Doctor of Music degree.  She studied filmmaking at Toronto Film School, and at UCLA Extension in Los Angeles where she received the Certificate in Directing, Certificate in Television Writing, and Certificate in Screenwriting, all “earned with distinction.”  She has directed numerous short films, and her filmmaking efforts quickly received recognition through festival screenings, a California Film Award, and a grant from BRAVO TV in Canada to write and direct a short film through BravoFACT.

Heather’s music career has encompassed performances, radio and television broadcasts, and recordings as a solo pianist and/or composer in numerous countries, including Canada, the USA, Russia, France, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, England, Cyprus, Mexico, Brazil, and the British West Indies.  Her numerous awards include three BMI Awards and two SOCAN Awards.  She has many commercial recordings to her credit, including recent releases on NAXOS, and CMC Centrediscs.  She has twice received Juno nominations for “Classical Composition of the Year” (2012, 2003).

Heather was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta.  After spending several years in New York City and Toronto, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her filmmaking aspirations.  Her films have been shown at numerous film festivals, including the La Femme Film Festival in Los Angeles, the Tuscon Film and Music Festival, the Belair Film Festival, the Cannes Festival Short Film Corner, and the Park City Music and Film Festival.  In the summer of 2011, Heather was invited to be a composer at the Sundance Institute’s documentary lab.

Heather’s film credits are listed on the Internet Movie Database.
